In 1998, tivaevae artist Mii Quarter was an artist-in-residence at Henderson
Intermediate school, Auckland, working with art teacher Diane Guthrie
and a class of 11year olds.
They started with drawings and paper
cutout techniques inspired by original Cook Island tivaevae quilts and
Matisse's cut paper panels.
These were developed into individual
pieces, similiar in scale and imagery to traditional pillow cases. The
material shapes are appliqued on using handstitching (blanket, chain and
stemstitch are predominantly used) and images are of the flora and fauna
of the Pacific.
The two quilts/wall hangings were made
by the students and a group of mothers at a working day at the school. Traditionally,
pieces are produced collaboratively with a group sitting around their quilts
cutting and stitching. The
quilts were gifted to the school by the artist and team of women and students
in a ceremony and they are now on display in the school hall.
The project was organised
by Lopdell House,Titirangi and funded by Creative Communities, New
Zealand.
