These banners depict the Auckland inner city area
of Ponsonby Rd and Karangahape Road where the children and their families
live, work and shop.
Each banner represents a time of day from early morning
to the middle of the night.
The school is divided into 5 "ropus
" or language immersion groups:Maori, Cook
Island Maori, Samoan, French and English. The
language of each ropu is used in their banner to convey sayings and
observations about the time of day and the activities potrayed.
The children were involved in all stages
of making the banners; drawing and cutting stencils, and printing and
painting onto the cloth. Materials used are textile inks on cotton duck
and each banner measures 1m x 2m.
The project was funded by "Creative
Communities" and it was devised and conducted by Barbara
Joseph with the Karangahape Road Business Association. |
