Val Griffith-Jones

Val Griffiths- Jones was born in London and moved to New Zealand in 1971. She enrolled in an art class and was there encouraged to use those domestic fabric techniques in which she was already skilled, to explore the themes of her immediate experience.

Val worked with the Fabric Art Co, to produce the "Stuffed Stuff Show" a witty collaborative project which brought crowds to 13 galleries throughout New Zealand.

Her subsequent solo show, "Stuffing On", consisted of 25 works. The pieces took about four years to make, working almost every day while her four sons were at school.

"I am consciously employing traditional home maker's techniques: crochet, knitting, mending, rug making, along with soft sculpture techniques I have developed to enhance the themes of my work. These range from motherhood and maidens to marriage and men. I am now prepared to be labelled a feminist artist."
