Wendy Bennett

Wendy Bennett was active in the textile field for ten years between 1986 and 1996.

She has no formal training in art but developed a passion for fabric while studying at Auckland Teachers College in 1972.

After marrying and producing three children the family moved to Waiheke Island in 1986.

Wendy designed and manufactured a range of textile products over the next decade.

She used a variety of techniques including applique, handpainting, screenprinting, dye work and machine quilting. Most of her work featured brightly coloured bold images often with a pacific flavour and a child like sense of fun.

Although her main area of interest was wearable art she also designed a range of felt masks for children and a series of wall hangings.

She exhibited work at the Compendium Gallery in Auckland and many craft shops throughout New Zealand. Her wearable art was shown at the Benson and Hedges Fashion Awards in Wellington.

She established 'Labyrinth' a co-operative clothing design shop in central Auckland in 1987 as well as setting up her own studio on Waiheke Island.
